Thanks for a Great 2022 Season!

As we enter the final days of our season, we wanted to make sure to thank everybody — our Passholders and our guests — for making 2022 another big success here at Hayward Golf Club!

Off-Season Golf Simulator

Just because our season at Hayward Golf Club ends on October 31st doesn’t mean you can’t keep the golfing spirit alive in the off-season! Hayward Golf Sim, powered by Trackman, is ready to make sure you can get in some virtual rounds over the winter!  Winter league opportunities will be available, as well.

Additionally, Golf Pro Mitch Byrd and Assistant Golf Pro Emilee McCusker will be available throughout much of the off-season for lessons, which would take place at the Hayward Golf Sim facility.  So if your game is in need of assistance even during the colder months, they’re ready to help!

Mark Your Calendars! 2023 Hayward Open Sign-Up Starts On Halloween!

The long-running Hayward Golf Club tradition will continue next year! The Hayward Open Tournament returns again on the weekend of Saturday, June 3rd and Sunday, June 4th in 2023, and we have the first details ready to share with you.

As usual, this will be a 45-hole event. There is an 18-hole stroke play qualifying round on Saturday, followed by 27 holes on Sunday, with your Saturday score determining if you are in the stroke play or match play brackets. There will be an optional practice round with a giant skins game on Friday, June 2nd.

The sign-up period for the Open will begin on Halloween — Monday, October 31st, 2022 — at 8:00am central time. Sign-ups will be accepted via email (proshop@haywardgolf.com) or phone call (715-634-2760) at that time. We cap the size of the field at 160, and the spots will go fast!

This is easily one of our most exciting and storied events here at HGC, and we expect that the 2023 edition will add another important chapter to the legacy. Congratulations again to our 2022 Champion, Matt Mellin, who notched the win in dramatic fashion, as well as our Senior Champion, Gary Swanson! Big Buck Shootout Reminder

Just a reminder for everyone about the Hayward Big Buck Shootout on Sunday, October 16th. Spots are going fast, so contact the Pro Shop now if you’re interested in joining this event!

The details are as follows:

• 4-Man Shamble, Best 2 Balls.
• Team Handicaps must be between 30 and 48, using verified USGA Handicaps.
• The maximum that one player can account for as part of that total is 12 (higher handicap players can be on teams, but they will be capped at 12).
• We hope to have an official Scorer with each group.
• Players must be ages 40 and above.

9am Shotgun start on Sunday the 16th.

Entry: $150 CASH Per Person, with a required $150 down payment per team upon sign-up. All entries going towards Skins and Cash Payouts. Entry does NOT include golf & cart if the player is not a Hayward Golf Club Passholder (Green Fee on the 16th will be $43.99 in that case).

Hayward Big Buck Shootout: Sunday, October 16th

We’ve got one more big event to add to our upcoming fall calendar: the Hayward Big Buck Shootout on October 16th.

The format is as follows:

“The Kuta” Tournament Reminder: September 18th

A reminder for all male senior golfers that the Joe Kuta Senior is just around the corner on Sunday, the 18th! One of our most-anticipated events every season, this tournament is open to any male golfers (both Passholders and non-Passholders) ages 50 and over.

Tournament entry is $40 for Passholders, which includes food and prizes, and $60 for non-Passholders (which includes green fee, food, and prizes). Additional details can be found HERE.

It should be a great day of golf, so if you’re at all considering joining, now is the time to let the Pro Shop know!

Also, a quick announcement that the fall hours for the Caddyshak Bar & Grill kitchen have taken effect, and are as follows:

Tuesday – Saturday
11am – 3pm

The bar will continue to operate and serve seven days a week during daily clubhouse operation hours.

Fall Rates Begin on September 19th

Now that September has officially arrived and with cooler temperatures on on the way, we have designated when our fall rates will take effect. As we will be aerating our greens during the week of September 19th, that is the day the fall rates will become active (from that point through the end of the season in October).

If the weather cooperates, the fall can be an incredible time for golf at HGC, with crisp air and arguably the best scenery of the year. So, even though we may be starting to head into the homestretch of the season, great golf may still await you!

Fall Passholder Promotion — Beginning September 8th

Now that September is only a couple of days away, we’re ready to again roll-out our Fall Passholder Promotion here at HGC.

It works like this: beginning on September 8th, if a person — who has not been a Passholder for the 2022 summer season — pays for a 2023 Pass, they will be extended Passholder privileges for the remainder of the 2022 fall season. It’s an excellent opportunity for prospective Passholders to get some extra value and take advantage of Passholder play in the fall at HGC.

Joe Kuta Senior Tournament — Sunday, September 18th

Senior golfers, mark your calendars: the 18th of September will be the day of our annual Joe Kuta Senior Tournament! It is open to any male golfers (both Passholders and non-Passholders) ages 50 and over, and it will be flighted by handicap.

Entry for the tournament is $40 for Passholders (which includes food and prizes) and $60 for non-Passholders (which includes green fee, food, and prizes). An optional skins game will be available to sign-up for, as well. Tee times will run between 9:04am and 11:20am on the 18th.

Play Golf Under The Stars! NIGHT GOLF on August 26th!

We’re getting closer to our new Night Golf event, which will be taking place on the evening of Friday, August 26th.

The format will be a flighted 9-hole 2-person scramble, walking only (very limited carts may be available only for extremely special circumstances), with tee times starting at 8:15pm.

Entry is $40 per person, which includes:
• 2 LED light-up golf balls, yours to keep after the event.
• Cash and merchandise prizes, plus 3 special events on select holes.

This event is limited to the first 40 players to sign-up. Golfers are encouraged to sign-up in pairs, but we will work to pair-up any singles that want to play.

There is still availability, but spots are filling up, so contact the Pro Shop soon if you have any interest in joining what we hope will be a really fun night on the 26th!

Board of Directors Election Results / Beer Tree Raffle WINNER

The votes of the Board Election were tallied on Wednesday evening, and the results are in! We welcome Dan Fandler, Dean Grossman, and Rich Koop to the Board, alongside Ron Mullins, who was re-elected. Also, the 50/50 raffle to raise funds for the new Beer Tree on Hole #15 has concluded, and the winner is… Mike Frenchick! Congratulations!

All told, the raffle — as well as a separate raffle run for the Men’s League a few weeks ago — brought in just around $1300, exceeding our goal! We sincerely thank everybody who chipped in, and you can be on the lookout for the new tree arriving soon!

Additionally, a heads-up that the TaylorMade Fitting Day on August 25th is proceeding as scheduled, and only a few slots remain open. So if you’ve been thinking about participating, now is the time to sign-up! Full details — including the link to book a slot — are available HERE.

Finally, we also wanted to acknowledge and congratulate the winners of the Ohrn Cup, which is a longstanding team competition run among a group of our Passholders.

Women’s Club Championship UPDATE

We wanted to make everyone aware that our upcoming Women’s Club Championship on August 24th & 25th (Wednesday & Thursday) will now feature TWO divisions: an Open division (for any golfers who wish to play in it) and a Senior division (for golfers ages 70 and up who wish to play in it).

All golfers will play off the Red tees, and all will be flighted. Both the Open Champion and the Senior Champion will receive dedicated parking spots for the next year, as well.

The Championship is open to all female Passholders of Hayward Golf Club, including Loyalty Passholders, and the entry is $40 per player, which includes prizes, trophies, and a chicken salad lunch after the second round on the 25th.  Payouts for both net and gross winners will be redeemable for Pro Shop merchandise.

Beer Tree Raffle Update

Our 50/50 raffle to raise funds for the replacement Beer Tree on Hole #15 is progressing very well! We’ve nearly hit our intended goal already, and wanted to send out one last call for anybody on the fence. Now is the time to jump in if you have any interest in potentially bringing home a sizable prize!

The winner of the raffle will be picked on Friday, August 19th. We really appreciate everyone’s support in helping to keep the Beer Tree legend going strong into the future. A few more details can be found HERE.

Additionally, our 2022 Spring Challenge 2-Person Scramble Match Play Tournament has concluded. Congratulations to Dave Blake and John Place for triumphing to become the ’22 Champs! Club Championships REMINDER

It’s Club Championship season here at Hayward Golf Club, with three significant ones coming up quickly on the events calendar!

First, the Junior Club Championship is this Friday, August 12th. With flights for girls and boys, the format will be simple: 18-holes, play your own ball. Girls play from the red tees, boys play from the white tees.

Open to any Passholders 18 years and under (graduating high school seniors are eligible!). Tee times start at 1:00pm. Entry is FREE!

Next, the Men’s Club Championship is set for this weekend on both Saturday and Sunday, August 13th and 14th. Open to all male Passholders at Hayward Golf Club, including Loyalty Passholders. On Saturday, you can play golf with whichever golfers you’d like; you will already be flighted, but you can build your own foursome with anybody (Pro Shop staff can help put you into a group if you would prefer that, as well). Sunday pairings will be determined based on the results from Saturday’s rounds, and will be posted on Saturday evening.

We will have a Senior Division for golfers ages 60 and over, with a separate Senior Club Champion. So whatever your handicap, age, or level of skill, there will be a flight in which you can be competitive!

The tournament entry fee is $50, which includes food, prizes, and trophy. Both the Men’s and Senior Champions will receive dedicated parking spots for the year, as well!

Then, the Women’s Club Championship will close-out the Club Championship season on August 24th and 25th (Wednesday and Thursday). Open to all female Passholders of Hayward Golf Club, including Loyalty Passholders.

The entry fee is $40 per player, which includes prizes, trophy, and a meal after the second round on the 25th.

NIGHT GOLF Event on August 26th!

It’s time to play some golf under the stars at HGC! On Friday, August 26th, we will be kicking-off what we hope will become a new annual tradition: a 9-hole night golf event!

The format will be a flighted 9-hole 2-person scramble, walking only (very limited carts may be available only for extremely special circumstances), with tee times starting at 8:15pm.

Entry is $40 per person, which includes:
• 2 LED light-up golf balls, yours to keep after the event.
• Cash and merchandise prizes, plus 3 special events on select holes.

This event is limited to the first 40 players to sign-up. Golfers are encouraged to sign-up in pairs, but we will work to pair-up any singles that want to play.

Also, while tee boxes, flagsticks, cups, and some yardage markers will have some illumination, golfers are also encouraged to bring a flashlight or phone to provide some additional lighting.

Second TaylorMade Fitting Day on August 25th / New Course RECORD!

TaylorMade is returning to HGC for a second fitting day on Thursday, August 25th. From 12pm to 5pm, a representative from TaylorMade will be standing by to assist you in trying out a variety of equipment on our practice facility. Pro Mitch Byrd will be available on the range to consult, as well.

Also, some major news for HGC’s history books: Brody Moreland has shot the new course record with a round of 63! He hit every green in regulation.

The previous record, a 64 shot by Tom Puls, has been tied a number of times, including by Brody himself (twice!). Prior to the course redesign in the late 1990s, Jim Pejka held the record with a 1991 round of 61.

Congratulations to Brody for adding his name to the lore of Hayward Golf Club!

Caddyshak Bar & Gril — Open for Lunch 7 Days a Week!

Open from 11am to 4pm, seven days a week, the Caddyshak offers a variety of burgers, sandwiches, fresh-made pizzas, salads, and more.  It is a great place to sit down for meal before a round of golf, after a round of golf, or even if you’re not golfing at all!  The Caddyshak is open to everyone!

Board of Directors Candidates Wanted

2023 promises to be an exciting year at the Hayward Golf Club as we prepare to celebrate our 100th season, continue our on-going efforts to improve our facilities, and strive to provide a great experience for our guests, Season Passholders, and the community at large.

The Hayward Civic Club manages the Hayward Golf Club and will be holding its annual Board of Directors election on August 17th. There are four positions to fill on our 11 member board.

Board terms are three years. You must be Season Passholder of the Hayward Golf Club to serve on the board. The board meets on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. Zoom and teleconference connections are provided for members that are unable to attend a meeting in person.

Board members are expected to attend monthly board meetings and actively participate in at least one committee. Committees include Golf, Grounds, House & Events, Finance, and Executive.

Sign up to run for the board by submitting your bio to the Pro Shop. Bios can be e-mailed to proshop@haywardgolf.com, or a hard copy can be dropped off at the Pro Shop. Deadline for signing up to run for a board seat is August 4th.

The Annual Meeting of the Hayward Civic Club will be held at 7:00pm on Wednesday, August 17th at the Hayward Golf Club. Election results are tabulated and results are announced at this meeting. All board candidates are required to attend the August 17th meeting since the new board will be seated immediately and committee assignments for 2023 will be made that evening.

Finally, congratulations to the winners of the Couples Club Championship! Quentin & Elizabeth Johnson (gross) and Ray & Michele Fleszar (net) are your new champs!

Beer Tree Fundraiser Raffle

A significant piece of Hayward Golf Club lore has been the “Beer Tree” on Hole #15, named because of the tradition that any golfer whose ball hits the tree should then buy drinks for the rest of the group. This tree was responsible a lot of fun drama and intrigue over the years, but it eventually came to the end of its lifespan, and the decision was made to remove it.

Various options for potential replacements were discussed over the course of this season, but the decision has been made to keep it simple: a new tree will be planted on Hole #15 in roughly the same location, so the Beer Tree legend will live on!

To offset some of the cost of planting the new tree, we’re running a 50/50 raffle. Tickets are $1, and are available in the Pro Shop. The winner’s name will be drawn in the fall.

We hope all who have been given some excitement and enjoyment from the Beer Tree over the years will consider supporting the raffle and help keep this HGC tradition going for years to come!

REMINDER: Couples Club Championship This Sunday!

The Couples Club Championship is on the docket for this Sunday, the 24th, and we still have some slots available. Utilizing the famed Chapman Alternate Shot format, this Championship is open to Hayward Golf Club Passholders. Additionally, beginning this year, men ages 70 and above are eligible to play from the White-Gold combo tees.

Tee times will start at 12:00pm on Sunday. Entry per couple is $40, which includes prizes, trophies, and post-round appetizers in the Caddyshak.

Men’s Club Championship — August 13th and 14th

The Men’s Club Championship is fast approaching as we move closer to August. As usual, the Championship will be a two-day event, taking place this year on August 13th (Saturday) and August 14th (Sunday).

The Championship is open to all male Passholders at Hayward Golf Club, including Loyalty Passholders. On Saturday, you can play golf with whichever golfers you’d like; you will already be flighted, but you can build your own foursome with anybody (Pro Shop staff can help put you into a group if you would prefer that, as well). Sunday pairings will be determined based on the results from Saturday’s rounds, and will be posted on Saturday evening.

We will have a Senior Division for golfers ages 60 and over, with a separate Senior Club Champion. So whatever your handicap, age, or level of skill, there will be a flight in which you can be competitive!

The tournament entry fee is $50, which includes food, prizes, and trophy. Both the Men’s and Senior Champions will receive dedicated parking spots for the year, as well!

Mark Your Calendars — 2022 Civic Club Benefit Tournament, August 7th

HGC’s annual Civic Club Benefit is already around the corner! This tournament is one of our “Majors” here at Hayward Golf Club, giving us the opportunity to continue to invest in the long-term health of the facility and deliver a high level of quality to our Passholders and our guests. Proceeds will go directly into our course improvement fund, from which a variety of projects will be made possible in the future, including upgrades to tee boxes, additional updates to the practice facility, and new/redesigned bunkers.

This year’s Civic Club Benefit (Title Sponsor: Chippewa Valley Bank) will be held on Sunday, August 7th.

Individuals can sign up, and the 3-person teams will be assigned by the tournament committee. These 3-person teams will be playing in 6-somes for additional excitement as you keep an eye on your competition.

There will also be a Calcutta, providing an opportunity to be a winner even if you’re not on the winning team.

Junior Club Championship — August 12th

Calling all Junior Passholders! Our Junior Club Championship is coming up fast on August 12th! With flights for girls and boys, the format will be simple: 18-holes, play your own ball. Girls play from the red tees, boys play from the white tees.

Open to any Passholders 18 years and under (graduating high school seniors are eligible!). Tee times start at 1:00pm. Entry is FREE!
