Hayward Civic Club Benefit Tournament — August 1st

The Civic Club Benefit is back again! This tournament is a major tentpole event for Hayward Golf Club, enabling us to continue to invest in the facility and strive for an ever-higher level of quality for our guests and passholders. Proceeds from this year’s event will go directly to our course improvement fund, from which projects like the new all-weather tee on the driving range, the Caddshak Bar & Grill improvements, and the planting of new trees on Hole 16 have been made possible.

This year’s Civic Club Benefit (Title Sponsor: Chippewa Valley Bank) will be held on Sunday, August 1st.

Individuals can sign up, and the 3-person teams will be assigned by the tournament committee. These 3-person teams will be playing in 6-somes for additional excitement as you keep an eye on your competition.

There will also be a Calcutta, providing an opportunity to be a winner even if you’re not on the winning team.

Fourth of July Dinner and Fireworks Viewing

We’re introducing a new offering this year to help celebrate Independence Day! On the patio and pergola area of Hayward Golf Club, we will be serving dinner from 5pm to 9pm on July 4th.

Menu
• Barbecue Chicken
• Corn on the Cob
• Homemade Potato Salad
• Angel Food Cake with Strawberries, Blueberries, and Whipped Cream

Cost is $25 per person, which includes tax and tip. Reserve your spot and it’s yours for the evening to watch the fireworks!

Cash bar available inside the Caddyshak. Cornhole games will be set-up outside, as well.

The Hayward Civic Club’s fireworks show will be begin at 10pm, and the patio area will be the best place to watch one of the largest patriotic displays in the area!

2021 Northwoods Match Play Sign-Up Now OPEN

For the ninth year in a row, we’re ready to kick-off our Northwoods Match Play event! We’re just now starting to take sign-ups. Here are the pertinent details:

• Use of Handicaps — Any ability level welcome!
• Single Elimination format.
• Open to the public and to passholders.
• Cash payout progressively increasing round by round.
• Schedule matches with your opponents at your convenience.
• Entry Fee: $25

The winner of the event will receive the Jim Place Memorial Trophy, named in honor of the late former champ.

A Message from the Club President

Hello Golfers,

I hope you are enjoying what is shaping up to be one of the greatest seasons in the nearly 100-year history of the Hayward Golf Club. That can’t happen without your support. Thank you! Following is an update on what is happening at HGC.

Season pass sales are at their highest level in nearly 15 years. Total rounds played are up. There is a good mix between daily fee and passholder rounds. We have seen a healthy increase in women, young adult, and youth play. Our Men’s 18 Hole, Women’s, Men’s 9 Hole and Thursday leagues are having great years. Our Women’s League launched a new event that hosted over 110 players last week, and the extremely successful Solheim Cup tournament was introduced last August. There was a record turnout at the recent Hayward Open, as well as at many outside tournaments held this year. There are a lot of tournaments slated for the next few months. Check our website for dates and details.

Our Caddyshak Bar & Grill has undergone a complete makeover: new paint, new carpet, new decorations, added sound-proofing, reorganized bar work area, new kitchen equipment, improved kitchen layout, and expanded the pergola seating area outside. The menu has been revamped and the food is excellent. We’ve added staff, and all employees have completed an extensive training program. The hard work and investment is paying off. Food and beverage sales are up significantly over last year, and well ahead of plan.

Thank goodness for the new irrigation system! In spite of extremely dry conditions over the past month, the course looks good and is in great shape. Green speeds have been increased to the 10-11 range, and are posted daily in the Pro Shop. Fairway lengths have been reduced. Four new trees have been planted on the 16th hole, and eight more will be added this fall. We will be adding a “first cut” of rough along the fairways and around the greens. We are working to improve the condition of our sand traps and will be testing different ways to maintain them, as well as reducing the amount of sand in a trap. A new all-weather tee was installed on the practice range and target greens are being added.

The club is in solid shape financially: revenue, profit, and cash on hand are up from last year and ahead of plan. We made our first of twenty annual loan payments on the irrigation system this spring, and have already banked the funds to make next year’s payment.

The Hayward Golf Club is committed to serving the Hayward area by offering an excellent and welcoming experience for all golfers and the community at large. Fourth of July Community Picnic and Fireworks — July 4th

The Hayward Civic Club is thrilled to once again be hosting an Independence Day picnic and fireworks display!

Beginning at 5:00pm in the field behind the Primary and Intermediate Schools, there will be food and drink vendors with a variety of offerings, a DJ, games for kids, and the Hayward Hawks baseball game (starting at 7:00pm).

The fireworks show will commence at nightfall, roughly in the 10:00pm area. This is one of the most fun evenings of the entire summer, and we hope you’ll come out and join us to celebrate!  The newly-expanded pergola area at the Caddyshak Bar & Grill will also make for an excellent viewing area!

We are also looking for volunteers to help with parking and crowd control from the hours of 5:00pm to 9:00pm, as well as volunteers for clean-up effort in the early morning hours of Monday, July 5th.

This event is only possible through the efforts of our Passholders taking part, so if you would be willing to assist us, contact Ben Kanters at the Pro Shop.

7th Annual Summer Classic — July 18th

Now entering its 7th year, the Summer Classic has quickly become one of Hayward Golf Club’s most storied events. We expect this year will add to the legend and maintain the standard of excitement that this day of golf has come to represent!

Teams of 2 will compete in flights over the course of 27 holes and 3 different formats (Scramble, Best Ball, Alternate Shot) to determine a champion. The course will be set-up in a unique way to provide the most fun and compelling event possible.

• $100 for Non-Members
• Includes Golf, Cart, Prizes, Trophies, and Post-Round Meal. Walking pricing also available.

Tee Times: 8:32am – 12:24pm on Sunday, July 18th.

First 120 Players.  SKINS GAME Will Be Available.  Sign-up as a twosome or as a foursome. Open to Men and Women. Can be a fantastic couples golf outing!

TaylorMade Fitting Day — June 24th / Wine Tasting Reminder

The second Fitting Day on our calendar is set for TaylorMade on Thursday, June 24th, from 12pm to 4pm. Sessions will be available in 20-30 minutes slots, and a TaylorMade representative will be on hand to help you find the best equipment to improve your game!

Reservations for this Fitting Day are required, so call the Pro Shop at (715) 634-2760 to book a slot ahead of time!

Upcoming Events at HGC

With summertime now in full swing, we want to give everybody some reminders about a few events coming soon to Hayward Golf Club!

First, the Lions Club Big Cup Golf Benefit on June 11th still has a couple openings. It’s always a great event with a fun crowd and good food!

Also, our Junior Golf Clinic on Thursday afternoons will be starting on June 10th! A six-week program, it is designed to give juniors the opportunity to learn about all aspects of the game, and will include 4 separate playing stations: putting, chipping, pitching, and full swing. Additionally, our experienced teaching staff provides a golf course knowledge station and mini par 3 course.

• Program runs every Thursday afternoon between 1-3PM from June 10th to July 15th.
• Aimed at ages 6 to 14.
• Program will conclude with our Junior Championship.
• Cost is $50 per junior (which includes prizes and gift for all participants).
• Clubs will be provided for juniors who don’t have any.

Additionally, to add a bit of extra intrigue to the upcoming U.S. Open, we’ve put together a fun golf format for those of you who want to spice up a couple of your rounds and make viewing of the Open tournament even more exciting!

Finally, here’s Pro Ben Kanters with a little bit of history about Hayward Golf Club’s original clubhouse!

As the story goes, the reason for the old clubhouse moving to the location of our current one is because a school was being built nearby, and the clubhouse — which was licensed to serve alcohol — was too close to where the school was going!
