Cribbage League Returns on Wednesday, January 5th, 2022!

After a hiatus, our offseason cribbage league is returning in the Caddyshak Bar & Grill starting on Wednesday, January 5th! The league will meet every Wednesday at 6pm through the remainder of the offseason.

• 2 person teams, with a blind draw for pairs before start of play each week.
• $11 per person — $10 goes towards winning teams of the night, $1 goes towards high hands of the night.
• Bar will be open.

If you know of anybody you think might be interested, but is outside the reach of our correspondence, please feel free to let them know about this league. It is open to anybody.

2022 Hayward Open: NEW DETAILS and Sign-Up Reminder

As a reminder, the sign-up for 2022’s Hayward Open tournament kicks off at 8am on Sunday, October 31st. Sign-ups can be made through email (proshop@haywardgolf.com) or phone call (715-634-2760).

Additionally, we wanted to announce some new details about next year’s event. In response to some feedback we’ve gotten over the years, we have now decided to add a brand new Senior division element to the tournament format. It is our hope that this addition might expand the event’s accessibility, while still preserving what makes it a great tournament.

On Saturday, June 4th, everyone in the field, regardless of age, will play 18 holes from the (softer) Blue tees, which has been the standard format, business as usual.

On Sunday, June 5th, ages 61 and under will see the top 24 players square off in the traditional Sunday format (27 holes of stroke play from the Black tees), while for ages 62 and up, the top 24 players will vie to become the Senior Hayward Open Champion over 27 holes of stroke play from the White tees.

Having all golfers play the same tee box on Day 1 allows an older player who plays well on Day 1 to declare down for Day 2 if he feels his game is ready for the challenge of the Black tees!

The remaining field in both age groups will compete in the usual match play format on Sunday.

Also for 2022, we’re bringing back the well-received steak dinner in the Caddyshak Bar & Grill on Saturday night, along with a Calcutta. There will also be an optional practice round with a giant skins game on Friday, June 3rd. We anticipate it being a great weekend of golf and fun!

Mark Your Calendars! 2022 Hayward Open Sign-Up Starts On Halloween!

Hayward Golf Club’s biggest tradition continues in 2022, and it’s time to offer up the first details about next summer’s Hayward Open Golf Tournament! The event will take place over the first weekend of June: Saturday, June 4th and Sunday, June 5th.

The cost per golfer is $100 for this 45-hole event (reduced Passholder entry of $80). There is an 18-hole stroke play qualifying round on Saturday, followed by 27 holes on Sunday, with your Saturday score determining if you are in the stroke play or match play brackets. There will be an optional practice round with a giant skins game on Friday, June 3rd, as well as an optional dinner and Calcutta in the Caddyshak on Saturday night.

The sign-up for the tournament will open on Halloween — Sunday, October 31st, 2021 — at 8:00am. Sign-ups will be accepted via email (proshop@haywardgolf.com) or phone call (715-634-2760) at that time. We cap the size of the field at 160, and the spots will go fast!

The Hayward Open is easily one of the most exciting events of our season, and we anticipate the 2022 edition will be no exception. Congratulations again to multi-year defending champion Jack Gustafson, and take a look at these highlights from this year’s tournament!

Also, Hayward Golf Club recently presented the Hayward Community Food Shelf with a $1,000 check from funds collected at the Ladies Solheim Challenge event that was recently held at HGC and coordinated by Cheryl Treland (see our coverage of that event HERE). 100 golfers participated in the Solheim Challenge, including many from our Women’s League, and they also donated 47 pounds of food to the Shelf!

Discounted Fall Rates — Beginning Monday, September 20th

As temperatures start to cool and the calendar shifts over to fall, it means our fall rates are soon taking effect. We will begin aerating our greens on Monday, September 20th, with the discounted rates kicking in at that time.

ABC Scramble — September 18th / Passholder Promotion Reminder

Joe Richie’s traditional fall scramble event is coming up on Saturday, September 18th, and there are still spots available for interested golfers! There will be three-person teams comprised of A, B, and C-level players, and which will be created by the organizers, competing in a scramble format.

Entry for Passholders is $50 per player, and entry for non-Passholders is $85 per player. The entry fees will cover a sizable payout and a substantial skins game pot.

Fall Passholder Promotion

Now that we’re on the verge of September, it’s time to once again roll-out our Fall Passholder Promotion here at Hayward Golf Club.

It works like this: beginning on September 1st, if a person — who has not been a Passholder for the 2021 summer season — pays for a 2022 Pass, they will be extended Passholder privileges for the remainder of the 2021 fall season.  It’s an excellent opportunity for prospective Passholders to get some extra value and take advantage of Passholder play in the fall at HGC.

So if you’ve been pondering possibly becoming a Passholder with us, this is too good a deal to pass up! And to our current Passholders, if you know any friends, family, or neighbors who might be interested in joining the community, send this information their way!

Joe Kuta Senior Tournament — Sunday, September 19th

The 19th of September will be the day of our annual Joe Kuta Senior golf tournament.  It’s a fantastic event, and always one of the tournaments we most look forward to each season!  Open to golfers (both Passholders and non-Passholders) ages 50 and above, and flighted by handicap.

Entry is $30 for Passholders (which includes food at the turn and prizes) and $50 for guests (which includes green fee, food at the turn, and prizes), with an optional skins game.  Tee times will run between 9:04am and 11:36am.

Our First-Ever Book Club — Join In!

Exciting news! We are hosting a one-of-a-kind event at the Hayward Golf Club: a book club featuring Twin Cities author Kerry Casey. He’s written a golf novel called “The Wager” and a number of the scenes take place on our course as well as in and around Hayward.  It’s a great read! I finished it in three days.

The book costs $20, with $10 going back into HGC projects, so it’s a win-win. The book club discussion will be held with Kerry at the Caddyshak on Wednesday, September 1, at 6 P.M. The Caddyshak will be open for dinner off its menu that evening, so this will be a fun opportunity to enjoy food, drink, and camaraderie, and to ask Kerry questions about what goes into writing a novel. “The Wager” is available in the Pro Shop—just talk to Ben or his team.

Fellow golfers, let’s read more than greens this August! Be a part of this unique, fun event.

Board of Directors Candidates Wanted

Do you care about our golf course?

Are you interested in helping our course continue to prosper and grow?

Would you like to have a say in how it’s operated and help plan for its future?

 

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you should run for a seat on the Board of Directors of the Hayward Civic Club.  The Hayward Civic Club is managed by an eleven person board of directors.  Board terms are three years and there are five seats to fill this year.  You must be a Season Passholder of the Hayward Golf Course to serve on the board.

The board meets on the 3rd Wednesday every month.  Zoom and teleconference connections are provided if a member is unable to attend a meeting in person.

The Hayward Civic Club board is action oriented.  Board activities in the past year included:

• Development of a strategic plan.

Board members are expected to attend monthly board meetings and actively participate in at least one committee.  Committees include Golf, Grounds, House & Events, Finance, and Executive.

Sign-up to run for the board by submitting a bio to the Pro Shop.  Bios can be e mailed to proshop@haywardgolf.com or hard copy can be dropped off at the Pro Shop.  Deadline for signing up to run for a board seat is August 6th.

The Annual Meeting of the Hayward Civic Club will be held at 7:00pm on Wednesday, August 18th, at the Hayward Golf Club.  Election results are tabulated and results are announced following this meeting.  All board candidates are required to attend the August 18th meeting since the new board will be seated immediately and committee assignments for 2022 will be made that evening.

Women’s Club Championship — August 18th and 19th

As we head into August, the sign-up period for our Women’s Club Championship is now open! Taking place over two days — Wednesday, August 18th & Thursday, August 19th — the Championship is open to all female Passholders of Hayward Golf Club, including Loyalty Passholders.

The entry fee is $35 per player, which includes prizes, trophy, and a meal after the second round on Thursday, the 19th.

Tee times for the event run between 8:32am – 9:04am on both the 18th and 19th.

Men’s Club Championship — August 14th and 15th

With August fast approaching, it’s time to start thinking about our Men’s Club Championship, which will unfold over two days on the weekend of August 14th (Saturday) and 15th (Sunday).

Open to all male Passholders of Hayward Golf Club, including Social Passholders. On Saturday, you can play golf with whichever golfers you’d like; you will already be flighted, but you can build your own foursome with anybody (Pro Shop staff can help put you into a group if you would prefer that, as well). Sunday pairings will be determined based on the Saturday round’s results, and will be posted on Saturday evening.

We will have a Senior Division for golfers ages 62 and over, with a separate Senior Club Champion. So whatever your handicap, age, or level of skill, there will be a flight in which you can be competitive!

The tournament entry fee is $45, which includes food, prizes, and trophy. Both the Men’s and Senior Champions will receive dedicated parking spots for the year, as well!

Tee times for the event will run between 10:56am – 12:48pm on Saturday, 8:56am – 10:48am on Sunday.

Solheim Challenge Reminder — August 16th

We wanted to make all female golfers aware that the Second Annual Solheim Challenge is coming soon on Monday, August 16th. 82 out of 120 total spots are currently taken, so if you’re interested in getting involved, the time is now!

The future of the game of golf is obviously something important to us here at Hayward Golf Club, and we take an active interest in trying to grow the game, both in the short term and for generations to come.

Couples Club Championship — Sunday, July 25th

An annual tradition, our Couples Club Championship will be held on Sunday, July 25th, with tee times starting at 12:00pm. Open to passholders, this is a great event for couples to have a fun round of golf together on the course. The Championship will be using the infamous Chapman alternate shot format to supply a bit of extra intrigue!

Entry per couple is $40, which includes prizes, trophies, and post-round appetizers in the Caddyshak.

Last year’s champs Josh & Breanne Hanson (Gross) and Tom Orszulak & Brenda Landgrebe (Net) will be looking to defend their titles!

Upcoming Junior Events at HGC

We have a pair of Junior events coming up towards the end of July that we wanted to make sure all our younger golfers are aware of!

First, our Junior Club Championship will be held on Thursday, July 22nd, with tee times starting at 1:20pm. Open to any Hayward Golf Club passholders between ages 14 and 18, as well as qualifiers from our Junior Program Putt, Pitch, and Drive Contest on July 15th.

Second, the Wisconsin PGA Junior Tour is hosting a tournament on Thursday, July 29th. This tour runs events all across the state, and on the 29th, they’re coming to HGC!

• Tee times will run from 11:00am to 1:00pm.
• Open to any participants aged 12 to 18.
• No handicap required.
• Age divisions are 16-18, 14-15, 12-13 for boys and girls.
• Entry fee: $35 for non-WPGA Tour Members, $30 for WPGA Tour Members.

Hayward Civic Club Benefit Tournament — August 1st

The Civic Club Benefit is back again! This tournament is a major tentpole event for Hayward Golf Club, enabling us to continue to invest in the facility and strive for an ever-higher level of quality for our guests and passholders. Proceeds from this year’s event will go directly to our course improvement fund, from which projects like the new all-weather tee on the driving range, the Caddshak Bar & Grill improvements, and the planting of new trees on Hole 16 have been made possible.

This year’s Civic Club Benefit (Title Sponsor: Chippewa Valley Bank) will be held on Sunday, August 1st.

Individuals can sign up, and the 3-person teams will be assigned by the tournament committee. These 3-person teams will be playing in 6-somes for additional excitement as you keep an eye on your competition.

There will also be a Calcutta, providing an opportunity to be a winner even if you’re not on the winning team.

Fourth of July Dinner and Fireworks Viewing

We’re introducing a new offering this year to help celebrate Independence Day! On the patio and pergola area of Hayward Golf Club, we will be serving dinner from 5pm to 9pm on July 4th.
